During that time period, it is belived that almost every home in America had a crazy quilt. The creation of a crazy quilt is simple. Not using a pattern, it is a variety of fabrics and other materials, such as velvet, silk, brocade fabric and cordouroy. These fabrics are cut into different sizes and shapes, lain on a foundation piece of fabric and randomly sewn together, often using fancy embroidery stitches using silk thread.
Crazy Quilts were created more as show pieces than functional bedding. They were often crafted as smaller lap throws and used to decorate the parlor. They were used as showpieces in affluent homes.
